He laughs. Then he clears his throat.

He had warned his friends. Not explicitly, but the look he gave them when he activated the message wall said everything: behave. There are things you say between guys, and things you do not say in front of one hundred and twenty people, including his wife’s parents.

The first message to appear was from his best friend.

What men don’t anticipate with a message wall is the coexistence of different registers. Within seconds, a locker-room joke can be followed by a sincere word from a father who never expresses anything, and then a message dictated by an 80-year-old aunt who doesn’t really understand what a “message wall” is but wanted to take part anyway. It’s this mix that is surprising. And often, it’s the father’s sincere words that hit the hardest.

The messages that caught him off guard

• His best friend, first message displayed

  “I promise I won’t say anything about what happened in Lisbon. Well… almost nothing.”

  His reaction: he laughed too loud, too quickly, and immediately turned to his wife to say “it’s a joke.” She didn’t really look convinced.

• His father, a man of few words

  “You chose well. That’s all I can say.”

  His reaction: he said nothing. He just nodded. The people around him understood it meant a lot.

• A childhood friend he hadn’t seen in ten years

  “We haven’t talked much in recent years. But seeing where you are tonight makes me genuinely happy for you.”

  His reaction: he searched for that face in the room. They found each other. They raised their glasses.

This is what the wall reveals in men: the gap between what they show and what they feel. The jokes come first, they are the shield. And then, when a sincere message breaks through, the shield drops for a second. Just one. But everyone sees it.

After the party, he reread all the messages. Alone, late at night, while his wife was asleep. It took him a long time to put his phone down.
